Stargazing Sojourns:
Night Skies at Americana Motor Hotel

Flagstaff, Arizona, is known for its mountain views and lively downtown, but it also holds a secret above—one of the best night skies in the world. Named the world’s first International Dark Sky City in 2001, Flagstaff is serious about preserving its incredible stargazing conditions.

The Americana Motor Hotel is the perfect base for sky-watchers, offering exclusive telescopes and peaceful surroundings for a truly memorable night under the stars. Here, the night sky feels close enough to touch, making it an experience that can’t be missed.

Nearby, a short drive leads to fantastic spots like the historic Lowell Observatory, the scenic Buffalo Park or the visitor’s parking lot at the Wupatki National Monument. Each of these places offers the space and stillness to enjoy the stars in all their brilliance.

For a change of pace, consider a visit to Starlite Lanes, a local institution that’s as much about community spirit as it is about fun. Located just three minutes from the Americana Motor Hotel, this historic, family-run bowling alley has been around since 1957. While it’s not about stargazing, its name certainly aligns with the celestial theme. Starlite Lanes is one of the only two string operated bowling alleys in the state, offering a unique experience with a touch of nostalgia. Even more impressive, the chef, who once worked at a Michelin-rated restaurant, serves up delicious food to enjoy between frames. It’s a a must-visit spot for locals and visitors alike.

The timing couldn’t be better, as the Lowell Observatory’s new 40,000-square-foot Astronomy Discovery Center opens November 16. The Americana’s Stargazer Package sweetens the deal, with two tickets to the observatory and, on Saturdays, a chance to join a “Meet a Scientist” event for a unique encounter with astronomy experts.

With Flagstaff’s clear desert skies and minimal light pollution, the stars here shine like few places on Earth. There’s no need to plan a complicated night—just look up, and let the sky do the rest.
